Incredibox is a colourful, visually appealing blend of game and music software. By tapping on a selection of beats, melodies, sound effects and voices, you can create your own unique mix. You can also share your mix with other users and unlock new sounds by completing hidden challenges within the game. It's easy to use and fun to watch and will have you making music in minutes.
A visual mixing deck
The game begins with a screen divided into two areas. The main section displays a performer, a morose-looking black-and-white youth. The menu at the bottom shows a selection of brightly-coloured costumes divided into beats, effects, melodies and voices. Drop one of the "beat" costumes on the singer, and he'll start beatboxing. At the same time, another performer will appear. Add a beat, melody or voice and he'll start singing too. A clock in the upper left-hand corner of the screen counts down the measure; new voices only join in at the beginning of a new measure.
Combining different beats, voices and effects lets you create a huge variety of different mixes; there are over 300 million possible combinations using Incredibox v4 alone, and each version includes a completely new set of elements to create songs with.
Clean, crisp and characterful
Many music apps mimic the appearance of a mixing board, which is accurate but not always easy for beginners. Instead, this app uses quirky characters to simplify the process. It's easy to look at the screen and see where each sound is coming from. Adding, removing or temporarily silencing a particular track is simple. Learning some of the other commands takes a little longer, but even so it's a simple, intuitive process.
The only real challenge is that there's no particular connection between sounds and the icons that represent them. Because there aren't a huge number of them, this isn't that much of an obstacle; after a few sessions with the game, you'll remember most of them, and it's not hard to find the ones you need with a few taps even if you don't.
Surprisingly robust musical gameplay
In the classic division, this app is really more of a toy than a game. It doesn't have a goal other than to make music in a simple and visually-pleasing way. After a while, mixes produced using a particular version will tend to sound a little similar to one another, but new versions add more variety to the available tools and keep things interesting.
Developers So Far So Good suggest this as a good way to get children interested in music, and that seems about right; it's colourful, visually interesting and easy to use rather than deep. As a bonus, the studio grants rights to use the mixes you create for personal or educational purposes, adding to the app's value as a teaching tool.
